Ways to Prepare for an Emergency

Emergency preparedness is the process of planning and taking steps to reduce the impact of a disaster. It includes knowing what to do before, during, and after an emergency. By being prepared, you can help to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

What to do before an emergency

Make a plan

This plan should include what you will do if you need to evacuate your home, how you will communicate with your family, and where you will go if you need to shelter in place. It is important to create an emergency plan that is unique to your family.

Assemble an emergency kit

This kit should include food, water, first-aid supplies, and other essential items that you will need in the event of an emergency. It is designed to help you to survive for your own for several days. Don’t wait! Create your disaster kit today.

Get involved

Being informed is extremely important. West Pierce Fire & Rescue offers Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training classes throughout the year. This course is designed to educate and train residents how to care for themselves following a disaster for hours or even days before professional help can arrive.

Understand hazards in your area

The first step in becoming better prepared is to be aware of what potential hazards and threats can occur in your area. Within West Pierce, potential hazards are earthquakes, fires, flooding, power outages and extreme weather (both hot and cold.)

Visit each hazard’s webpage to understand how to better prepare yourself for these types of incidents, both before, during and after.
